Weekly Reflections

I found the Normal reading interesting. I have read Design of Everyday Things before, but don’t remember such close reading of affordances, signifiers, constraints, conceptual models, etc. One thing that I was considering, with this content as well as some of the projects that we’ve seen as examples is how we can play with the distance between these things in designed experiences that are more conceptual, artistic, etc. instead of more functional or commercially viable products. I think of how affordances become habit and disappear over time. Early Facebook had a little thing at the top of the feed that indicated pull to refresh. But now, that indicator has disappeared and turned into habit. How might we turn that on its head in a more critical piece?

Lab Reflections

This week I was able to get to the end of chapter 5 (so I’m behind a lab, so will work to make it up this week). I was able to turn my LED on, have it work with switches in different ways, and also pulse. Something that I am learning is how to build the circuit without just following it IKEA-style from diagrams. One way that I am thinking about how electricity moves is that the numbered ports are positive, and the ground is negative. The numbered ports are also able to be “defined” and “programmed” unlike if we did this with just a battery or something like that.
